The shouting of the crew and the captain’s orders are entirely eclipsed by the howl of the ocean. Out of the necessity to hear orders over the roar of the sea, the bosun whistle was created. The bosun whistle was born during the Classical era of Greece, a time in which seafaring and trade between foreign countries was just beginning to grow into a sustainable business venture. Many ships made their bosun whistles from thread, small bits of metal to shape the bell, and cheap twine or reeds. In order to keep a good grasp of the bosun whistle during times of crisis or when the sea is rocking the ship brutally or otherwise sending hard waves, the user wraps the chain on the end of the bosun whistle around his or her neck or wrist to secure it. The bosun whistle is put away in the user’s clothes securely, or looped around the neck.
